It was one of the ways I could spend more time with my father. So I sat beside him, watched the matches, learned the rules, and over time discovered that sport often tells us far more about life than we realise.

Recently, while watching coverage of the World Cup, one statistic caught my attention.

This is Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup.

Six.

For most athletes, simply reaching one would be the achievement of a lifetime. By the sixth, the story should have ended long ago. The records broken. The trophies won. The wealth accumulated many times over.

After all, what more could there possibly be left to achieve?

And yet there he is.

Still training.

Still competing.

Still showing up.

It made me wonder whether we have misunderstood success entirely.

We live in an age that constantly tells us success is a destination. Earn enough money. Gain enough followers. Receive enough recognition. Build enough status. Then, finally, you can rest.

But when you look closely at the people who achieve these things, something curious happens.

Many of them keep going.

Not because they have to.

Because they want to.

Money can buy comfort. It can buy freedom. It can buy options. But it cannot give someone a reason to get out of bed at five in the morning and do something difficult for the thousandth time.

That comes from somewhere else.

Discipline.

Purpose.

Pride in one’s craft.

The quiet satisfaction of becoming a little better than you were yesterday.

Perhaps that is what I find so inspiring about people like Ronaldo. Not the fame, the endorsements, or even the records themselves.

It’s the refusal to settle.

The decision to choose hard work when mediocrity would be perfectly acceptable.

The willingness to persevere long after the world has already applauded.

Because if success teaches us anything, it is this: that achievement is rarely the reward. The person you become in pursuit of it - that’s the real gold.

At Champagne & Ink, we often write about things that endure.

A beautifully crafted watch.

A perfectly tailored jacket.

A fountain pen passed down through generations.

Objects that remind us that quality never goes out of style.

Perhaps the same is true of character.

In a world that celebrates novelty, there is something deeply reassuring about the virtues that remain unchanged.

Discipline.

Consistency.

Patience.

Excellence.

The world may change. Technology may change. Trends certainly will.

But success, earned through dedication and perseverance, remains timeless.

And perhaps that is why stories like Ronaldo’s continue to resonate.

Not because they remind us what is possible.

But because they remind us what still matters.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" The first is written down: the food, the wine, the timings. The second is invisible, unwritten, crafted only by the most sophisticated of hosts: the company. And it is always the second that makes or breaks the night.

I’ve been to many dinner parties where the food was flawless, the wine list impeccable, and yet the evening fell flat. Why? Because the alchemy was missing. The wrong mix of guests can kill even the most carefully plated course. Too much sameness and the night becomes predictable. Too much ego and it becomes unbearable.

The best dinners I have ever hosted, and the best I have ever attended, had little to do with the food itself. It was the guest list, unspoken but deliberate, that shaped the magic. A table should always be set with balance. The raconteur who tells stories with ease should sit opposite the quiet observer who asks just the right questions. Old friends need to be anchored by new ones, so the conversation never collapses into nostalgia. Laughter should ricochet across the table, not circle in one corner.

It is tempting to invite only people we know well. Safe, predictable, comfortable. But the unwritten rule of a true dinner is this: the evening is never about comfort, it is about chemistry. The right mix of voices, temperaments, and appetites can turn a Tuesday night into a memory you will carry for years.

And so, the guest list matters. Not in the way a spreadsheet does. Pardon my finance brain, spreadsheets will always be my bread and butter of course. But people, the right people, they are the real feast. Perhaps perfume is the better comparison: invisible, yet unforgettable.

The food will be eaten, the wine drunk, the night will end as all things must. What lingers is not the dessert, not even the toast. It is the feeling of having been in the right company, at the right table, at exactly the right time.

When was the last time you met a kindred spirit across your wine glass?

The Glass Remembers

“A drink is never just a drink. I spent more than a few afternoons stretched out by the rooftop pool at The Ned, skin warm from the sun, eyes closed to the lazy hum of conversation. It could have been perfect. But then the rosé arrived. Poured into a plastic wine…cup? A wine-glass-shaped impostor, fooling no one but the careless.

I understand, of course. Health and safety. Rooftop pools and broken glass are uneasy companions. But still, I would gladly risk a sliced pinky toe for the chance to hear that crystalline clink a glass makes when raised to the light. Plastic doesn’t sing, it sulks. And Lady A, my rosé of choice, deserves to be heard, not muffled. So do I.

Glassware matters. Not because it is expensive, not because anyone is keeping score, but because it changes the way a drink remembers itself. The weight in your hand, the curve against your lip, the sparkle it throws back to the sun. These are details that outlive the drink itself.

Champagne from a flute is not champagne from a coupe. Which is better? That depends on the day. Flutes are practical, but a coupe is sexy and unapologetically theatrical. It demands attention. Whisky in crystal is heavier, wiser, more serious than when poured into something flimsy. I love the anchor of a whisky glass with a strong base, especially when I am wearing high heels.

Wine glasses come in every shape and size. Anticipating the form my Margaux will arrive in is like waiting for a blind date to walk through the door. It is also how I judge a restaurant: first, by their wine list and then by their glasses. There are probably a gazillion rules for pairing the right glass to the right shade of white or red. I, however, keep only one. Never overfill when pouring. Never empty it in a single breath.

We do not remember the liquid, not exactly. What lingers is the glass. Its voice, its presence, its quiet insistence that the moment mattered. Good glassware does not shout. It whispers. And when it does, you realize you were never drinking just the wine. You were drinking the scene.

Anyone who has been told a paper straw does not affect the taste of a drink knows exactly what I am talking about. I call nonsense on that one too.

Welcome to Champagne & Ink

Every life is made up of moments.

Sue Chan

Every life is made up of moments.
